To get an idea of the climbs here to get a small height profile description. In Tulcan to the border I am on 2830 m climb, at 3,150 m, have a mad descent to 1,550 m and rise again after work at 2117 m. Here I make that day even 131 km. Es geht zunaechst wieder auf 3.000 m , dann auf 1.500 m hinunter und endet fuer mich an diesem Tag bei 2.055 m, 23 km vor und 935 m "unter" Quito. Diese Strecke/Hoehe nehme ich dann am Sonntag "spielend" und nach einem Telefongespraech mit David (er hatte vor 11 Jahren 3/4 Jahr in unserem Institut gearbeitet), holt er mich vom Ortseingang Quito ab. "Hotel, ach was, du wohnst bei uns." Ich werde in einer eigenen Wohnung untergebracht, fue rstlich verpflegt und verwoehnt. Ich verlaengere meinen Aufenthalt zwar um einen Tag, aber dann muss ich wirklich weg, um mich nicht to get used to so much convenience.

Der zweite Abschnitt dieses Tages konnte unterschiedlicher nicht sein. Erst noch 10 km leichtes Gefaelle durch Urwald. Dann ist es, wie auch am ganzen naechsten Tag, flach und fuehrt durch Bananenplantagen (Ecuador ist der groesste Bananenexporteur der Welt). So erreiche ich am Montag abend die Grenze und fahr am 07.11.2006 von Huaquillas nach Peru.
